Top 10 5-Star Books(??)

Haven’t done Top Ten Tuesday in a while! This week’s topic intrigued me…top ten books you think you’ll give 5 star reviews. Being Awfully Picky, I rarely give books 5 star reviews, so this should be interesting.

  1. Conversations with Kafka by Gustav Janouch – From what I gather, this book retells conversations that supposedly took place between Franz Kafka and Janouch, a son of a friend or something. Kafka + urban legend = I’m already hooked.
  2. The Bridge Over the River Kwai by Pierre Boulle – Loved the movie, hoping the book is just as good!
  3. The Collapse of the Third Republic by William Shirer – What can I say…I have a weird/unhealthy fascination with the collapse of societies and the takeover of evil regimes (from the perspective that if we can see AND heed the signs, we can stop it from happening at home). But apart from that, this is a classic of history so should be good.
  4. Life and Fate by Vasily Grossman – This book has nearly 4.5 stars on Goodreads and SRK, one of my favorite book Instagrammers, raved about the author (which is how I discovered him to begin with). I’m kind of banking on a 5 star review at this point. 😉
  5. Tales of Hoffmann by E.T.A. Hoffmann – I read some Hoffmann a few years back; some of it was amazing and some of it was cringy. I’m hoping this is amazing!
  6. The Yearling by Marjorie Rawlings – Growing up, I enjoyed the movie, and I expect I’ll get even more out of the book now I’m older.
  7. Watership Down by Richard Adams – This is a favorite book of one of my favorite musicians (Adam Young aka Owl City), and the story sounds right up my alley.
  8. The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11 by Garrett Graff – I’m going off of this review by Stephen, who’s been known to have pretty good taste in books. 😉
  9. Le Morte d’Arthur by Thomas Malory – This will either be a 1 star book or a 5 star book, I’m pretty sure.
  10. Emily Dickinson: Letters – I’ve already read some excerpts from her letters so I have a feeling I’ll love this book.

Oh, Watership Down is an amazing book. It has everything: adventure, comedy, and even a little bunny romance. I should warn you that it’s a tearjerker, though, so keep those tissues handy!

I’ve heard there’s dystopian elements to it. I love animals so it’s going to be pretty emotional I think! =(

I’m the same way. My highest rating is an “A” and I rarely give them out, so honestly, there’s no way I can predict which books are going to earn them. I put a different spin on today’s topic to make things easier on myself 🙂

    Happy TTT!

I like your spin on it! It can be so surprising to see what books become 5 star (or not) 🙂

Okay, I’m going to get Life and Fate. I’ve been looking at it but you’ve helped me make up my mind.

Le Morte d’Arthur ……. just be prepared …… it’s really quite a weird read. Prepare for something unique!

Oooh, weird?! I’m not well up on King Arthur so I’m not quite sure what to expect. :O The agedness of it scares me enough… I might have to read a dumbed down version haha.

An interesting group of books. They all sound good. I have only read The Collapse of The Third Republic. I thought that it was excellent. I read it long ago but it still shapes my thinking about the fall of France.

Glad to hear that! It’s *quite* a tome but I don’t mind making the investment if it pays off. 😉

Hope these books live up to your expectations! I really struggled with this week’s tag as I hardly ever give out five stars but it has made me excited to get to reading some books that have been on my TBR for ages.

Thanks for the mention! I hope you’re able to enjoy these soon. Cyberkitten did a review of Watership Down a few years back, I think…

Yeah, reading it over, it occurred to me I ought to read some of them THIS year… I think only 2 of them are on my “2020 list.” 😛

Too much in the sense of subject matter, or writing style? I have to say I’m not at a good point to pick up anything too dense… I used to be able to plough through tomes without much problem, but my attention span diminishes every year.

I really liked the book Over the River Kwai. Hoffman’s Tales were interesting if a bit archaic in delivery. I’m glad I read the Yearling, but I didn’t like the violence towards animals. I’m too soft hearted. I haven’t finished King Arthur. Just couldn’t get into a story about talking Rabbits, my fault, I’m sure. Look forward to hearing how you enjoy the stories.

I should’ve put Kwai on my list for this year… not too late I guess. 😀 Hm, I can’t remember violence towards animals in the movie Yearling; I guess there was some off-screen slaughter. Might have to skim a bit…
