12/17 Update: I drew 2 numbers from a virtual hat, and the winners of the giveaway are Joan and Paul! Congrats! I will be shipping your books out today. And a big thank you to everyone who entered and/or shared about the book on your blogs—it means a lot to me. 🙂

Some of you might remember this post from last year, where I shared a fanfiction I wrote about the Nutcracker story. Your feedback was very encouraging! And I thought…maybe this story isn’t so bad. 😉

This summer, I found an amazing artist who was excited to illustrate the story. I also gave it a brand new title to better distinguish it from the wealth of Nutcracker stories: Drosselmeyer’s Dream. With some heavy editing to iron out the rough edges, I finally published it on Amazon!

Synopsis from my author website:

Young Drosselmeyer arrives at his uncle’s Christmas Party with a gift for his cousin Clara: a beautiful nutcracker. Little does he know that trapped inside is a mysterious prince, who longs to return to his kingdom and face his arch-nemesis, the North King. When Clara disappears, Drosselmeyer sets off to rescue her, but soon he is caught up in the Nutcracker’s quest to save his homeland and break the curse.

Inspired by Tchaikovsky’s ballet, Drosselmeyer’s Dream is a Nutcracker retelling for fans of medieval fantasy and old-fashioned fairy tales.

I plan to keep my writing and book reviewing separate from each other going forward. But just this once, I wanted to share this with you all, and thank you again for your support! 🙂 (Mudpuddle and Sharon, you also read another of my novels and gave me feedback, which I’m hoping to edit next year—so an extra thank-you to you!)

Self-publishing on Amazon is quite an experience. I learned so much, such as the madness of managing page numbers and the astronomical costs of publishing in color. 😆 Overall, though, it went pretty well, and I can definitely recommend it if you are looking for a relatively easy way to share your writing commercially.

Giveaway – CLOSED

For anyone who’s interested, I’m giving away 2 free copies of the book. This would be a great Christmas or New Year’s gift to yourself! 😀 I will randomly draw one name to receive the full-color illustration edition (blue cover) and a second name to receive the black-and-white edition (red cover).

  1. Very exciting! I wish you every success. My nephew wants to illustrate public domain books. Do you know any books or sites where he can get information about the process?

    1. Thanks, Sharon! 🙂

I know that Amazon allows you to publish public domain books if you have added something unique to them, like illustration. This is their info page about it: https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G200743940
IngramSpark is the other big name for self-publishing…I’m not sure what their policy is.

What I appreciate about Amazon is that it’s free to publish (apart from ordering proof copies), and super fast. Easy to navigate the process, view royalties, etc, and the distribution is baked in. Main downside is they only do paperbacks and ebooks at the moment, not hardcovers, and color illustrations are much more costly than black & white.
