What I’m Reading: August 2024 edition

I’m on an autofiction kick at the moment. My current read is Cold Enough for Snow by Jessica Au, a novella from 2022 I’d never heard of before. I stumbled upon it in a small bookstore, only to purchase it at a big chain bookstore later on, since I had exercised restraint earlier (sigh). It’s an introspective account of a daughter taking her mother to Japan for a vacation, with scenes happening both in the present and in the past. I wouldn’t call it groundbreaking or anything, but I am enjoying it.

Before that, I read Pond by Claire-Louise Bennett, which is also fiction that feels a little like a memoir. It’s a series of day-in-the-life vignettes of the author, who is an academic living in a cottage in Ireland. It’s a charming, poetic tale, almost perfect but for occasional crudity that doesn’t fit the rest of the book. Overall, I enjoyed it.

Last month, my boyfriend and I read Piranesi by Susanna Clarke, because we wanted to take a break from heavier books and read some genre fiction. We weren’t too impressed with it, but we had endless fun roasting it. I wish I had liked it better.

I’m still reading Paradise of the Blind, a novel from Vietnam, off-and-on. It’s not a book to be enjoyed, but I do want to finish it eventually.

Soon I’ll be reading The Valley of Fear, this month’s installment in the Sherlock Holmes reread with Cyberkitten. I can’t remember much about it, so it’ll be like reading it for the first time!

I’ve been really terrible at the book reviews recently, but I have been reading quite a bit, so perhaps it’s for the best at the moment. 😉

  2. Started ‘Valley..’ yesterday to fit it in with other reading. It also fits in nicely with the other Classic reads I’m working through ATM. When we finish the joint Sherlock reads I have quite a few Sherlock *related* reads planned… Should be FUN. I’ll probably read them on the same schedule – so the end of every other month.

  3. Have you read A Study In Scarlet? It’s the first Sherlock book, and it’s real good. Neil S.

      1. I’ve never worked Sherlock into any of my blog pieces, as far as I can remember. Maybe I should.

    2. For your novellas challenge

Most books by Annie Ernaux are around 100- 150 pages if you are still in a auto fiction kick.

      Edouard Leve – “Suicide”

Gerard de Nerval – “Aurelia/ Sylvie”

Stefan Zweig is now mostly copyright free so “Chess Story/ The Royal Game” and “Amok” are good choices.

Paul Leppin, a Kafka contemporary who painted a great picture of that days Prague in “Severins Jouney into the Dark”.

Irene Nemirovsky – “The Misunderstanding” is a nice introduction to her ouvre.

For sketches/ biographies of a single life: Richard Weihe – Sea of Ink and Dennis Johnson- Train Dreams

Peirene Press is an publisher that translates mostly short books or novellas 200 pages or under if you need new material.

  4. Why didn’t you like Piranesi? I didn’t love it the way i loved Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, but I’m not sure why it would deserve a roasting…

    1. Hey Beth! We posted a review of it on YouTube: https://youtu.be/tbEINf4Gtrs?si=fKSqfKaeD7nOectZ
We tried not to be too critical, but I guess it just didn’t click with us :/ We’re definitely in the minority, most of my Goodreads friends really liked it.
