Should You Watch The Rings of Power? – First Impressions of e1 & e2 (no spoilers) MarianSeptember 12, 2022Blog Post navigation PreviousNext Share this:TwitterFacebookLike this:Like Loading...
Thanks for this. I had zero interest in trying it given the source, and the fact that I’ve not read any of Tolkien’s non-published works. I certainly don’t want Amazon’s marvel treatment of the stories warping my experience with them if I DO get around to reading any of the other works that Christopher Tolkien collected and published under his dad’s name.

So far, I don’t think it will warp my experience. I am actually more interested in reading them now. 🙂
The only way that I can find this series ‘watchable’ is to watch the episode, then see Shad & Nathan’s review on their Knight Watch YouTube Channel. It evolves into a personal challenge to see if they noticed the same things I did! I view it the same way as I do Biblical movies – if it’s contains poor representation of the characters/writing/acting/visuals, I laugh at the ridiculousness and consider it a comedy(That David & Goliath movie from 2015 was a perfect example of a dumpster fire). If there is attention to detail and contains quality content – I fall in love with it and treasure it. It all depends on how you approach it. Personally, I could see Tolkien rolling over in his grave with this series. He was a stickler for detail and I know he would be livid seeing what Amazon is doing to his world in comparison to Peter Jackson’s trilogies(The Hobbit, and The Lord of The Rings). The poor writing is what infuriates me the most – so I consider it a comedy for now and I am enjoying it immensely!😂

That’s one way of watching it, for sure! 😉 I don’t know if I could stand to watch a whole series that I disliked (although I watch very little these days as it is).
It’s interesting to consider different levels of liberties/changes people are comfortable with. Christopher Tolkien disapproved of the Jackson trilogy, although whether he had ever tried it or not, I am not sure. There is a good chance I will like this series less after I’ve read the source material, but perhaps it is best enjoyed as a pastiche or spinoff than an adaptation…
