A belated Merry Christmas

It’s been exactly a month since my last post and once again, I am sick. :] It was going around in my family, so I saw it coming. The fever was annoying, but the sore throat was worse—between the two, this was the first Christmas I lost weight. I’m doing much better this week, but pretty tired of it all!

You would think that I have been reading a lot, but I really haven’t been up to it, just slowly making my way through The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Today I am back at work as well. I will not manage to complete my Goodreads challenge this year, but that is ok. As I regain energy, I’ll finish The Adventures, continue on in Noli Me Tangere by José Rizal, and start The Samurai which is a January readalong.

This is the first year in forever that I did not ask for any books for Christmas! I have been very, very good about the “read what I own” challenge. 😇

Other than being ill, life has been great, and I am really looking forward to the new year. Lots of exciting plans!

  2. I’m glad you’re feeling much better. Being ill is NO fun – but more so at Christmas! Looking forward to your reading plans for ’24. I also have some interesting things lined up… and my reading speed seems to be increasing. Maybe my LONG page count ‘slump’ is finally over?

      1. Unknown at this point although its likely to be psychological.. Only 3 things come to mind really: We’ve just gone through the Winter Solstice so I’m looking forward to longer days which may have lifted my mood a bit. I’ve started drinking green tea (with lemon) around 1pm each day which I look actively forward to… and my main gaming partner has just got himself a new girlfriend, so we’re not talking late into the night after our gaming sessions anywhere near as much… Plus, I have read a few very engaging books lately (like ‘The Travelling Cat Chronicles’ by Hiro Arikawa) which might be helping.

I’ve been monitoring it for a while now and, so far, I’ve been easily managing 70pp a day (where I sometimes struggled to hit 50-60) and 80pp doesn’t really faze me – with minimal effort. Lately I’ve been hitting 100pp a day even reading only reasonable novels. That being the case I’ll start slowly increasing book page counts over 250pp and may even go for 300+ more often. My BIG books are calling to me!

        1. Green tea is amazing! Also 100p a day, that is the dream. 😮
I do think my speed and level of engagement are directly correlating. It’s just common sense I guess, but I can easily finish a book in a day or two if it grabs me. I need to find those books more frequently!

Hey, Marian, That sickness is everywhere. My family is getting over it for the second time in two months. Glad to hear you’re improving. I don’t feel much like reading when I’m sick either. And neither did I meet my reading goal this year. But it’s just a number. Good for you sticking to your unread books. I’m working on mine, too. Here’s to a successful year of reading what you already own!

    1. Aw no, I’m sorry to hear that! It’s been almost two weeks here, and I’m still not fully well. :/
You’re right, it’s just a number! I am excited to read what I own next year too. 🙂
