      The amount of things my fellow Americans needlessly refrigerate boggles the mind — especially stuff like ketchup and mayo. WHY would someone put cold condiments on a hot burger?

      I’m not much of an egg eater but I still mentally double-take when I see eggs on the shelf with other baking ingredients 😆

      Eggs are the least of my worries, though… I’ve been struggling with the food to an embarrassing degree. Italian food is too sweet and cookies/biscuits aren’t sweet enough!! And that’s just the beginning 😦

         Have you tried fries with malted vinegar? My only grocery store doesn’t carry the stuff, and I never remember to look when I’m in Birmingham or some other place. (Alabama’s Birmingham was intentionally named after the English Birmingham in hopes that it would mirror the latter’s industrial prominence: it did to a degree but now specializes in healthcare. There are similar towns around it named Leeds, etc.)

            Malted vinegar is definitely an acquired taste! Where on earth did you pick THAT up?

               I’d read or heard that vinegar is often served with chips/fries rather than ketchup, and I mentioned to a friend of mine that I wanted to try it at some point. (We were probably watching a British movie at the time.) He said “Make sure it’s MALTED vinegar”. I take it from your reaction that malted vinegar ISN’T the norm with them?

            I haven’t tried it… I just about had an existential crisis the other day when I got fish n chips without proper tartar sauce. Curry sauce is more common here 😮

               My town is small enough that we’re expected to eat fish with ketchup unless we specifically ask for tartar sauce — except at Captain D’s, where we can also get cocktail sauce with the shrimp. Fancy smancy stuff.

         The egg thing is (apparently) THE most surprising thing about living in/visiting the UK for Americans… that an no power outlets in the bathroom, washing machines in the kitchen, no waste disposal in the sink, and on/off switches on the power sockets… Quite the cultural change!

         No doubt your taste buds will adapt [lol] Plus its a great opportunity to try out various sweets/candy or cookies/biscuits until you find the ones you like. There’s PLENTY to choose from. Plus you can (often) pick up American candy etc in the bigger stores.

            I’ll probably lose a few pounds at least… 😆

            There’s definitely been some culture shock, beyond what I experienced when I lived here for a month last summer. The food has been the biggest one. Another is people asking “you alright?” instead of “how’s it going?”. As someone who already overthinks social interactions, it really trips me up haha.

               Oh, I’ve heard that confuses Americans…..! We are SO two countries/cultures separated by a common language!!

   @ Stephen: Oh, DEFINITELY MALT…..! The other kinds are definitely NOT for chips. I just wondered about why you’d thought of it. I didn’t think it was a ‘thing’ in the US.
